Oilers pick at 40: Anton Lander

6.0, 185 according to Elite prospects. They also say:

A very smart two-way player with excellent hockey sense. Lander reads the game well and makes mature decisions with and without the puck. Plays with some intensity, but his skating needs some improvement. Is a capable playmaker that protects the puck very well and usually comes out with the puck from the corners and along the boards. Defensively aware and with leadership skills.

47gp, 4-6-10 in the SEL. 7:39 a night, -2 (13-15).

Ranked
  • Bob McKenzie: HM
  • ISS: 47
  • Redline: 54

Bob McKenzie: Lander is a two-way checking forward with excellent outside speed. He can make plays at full speed and controls the puck with a lot of confidence. A very unselfish player, Lander is always aware of where his teammates are and makes good crisp passes. He is a hard working forechecker, keeping his feet moving all the time. With a strong quick release wrist shot, he often uses d-men as a screen off the offensive rush. Lander drives the net hard with and without the puck and doesn’t quit on the puck until the whistle goes. Reliable and disciplined, he brings a consistent effort to the rink every game and always improves his team’s chances of winning a game. Will adapt and play any role given by coach."

  1. That scouting report, right down to the player's origin, screams "Detroit pick".

    Early reviews are positive.

  2. With Budish still on the board, I call this a miss.

  3. Sounds great. Seriously. The good thing about taking the Swedes too, is that the Oilers are protected from themselves for at least one year and the SEL is way better than junior hockey.

  4. Hmm. Has anyone ever made deal a la Hartnell, like Calgary made -- for a guy about to become a UFA immediately -- and not signed the guy? On the one hand, the player really has the club over a barrel regarding negotiations; he won't come cheap to Calgary. On the other hand, JayBo's certainly a Flame now, right? Crap.

  5. One good thing is that the Oilers are no longer ignoring Europe. Over the last few years it seemed to me the Oilers were hesitant to use any early picks.

Take the bpa, with the understanding Russia is a little different until things settle down again.

  6. GF: I think the Habs made a conditional deal a year ago, can't remember who it was for and they did not sign him. Sundin?

  7. Calgary Flames have gained the rights to negotiate with Bouwmeester after trading Leopold and a 3rd to Florida.

Leopold is a free agent at July 1st as well.

Here's hoping they don't convince him to sign =(.

  8. Lander's scouting report reads a lot like Zetterberg's as a prospect. Seems like that's where the Oilers are hoping he'll head developmentally.

It's a pick I'm willing to trust that the scouting staff is making the right choice.

I hope that Rajala is available for our thirds.

  9. If the Flames sign Bouwmeester, they're going to be at somewhere around 43 million in cap hit for eight players, assuming no deals:

    F: Iginla, Jokinen, Langkow
    D: Bouwmeester, Regehr, Phaneuf, Sarich
    G: Kiprusoff

That would be stupid cap management, because it basically means you're filling 14 roster spots for about 13 million. Not even Darryl Sutter is that stupid.

So if they hope to sign him, a big salary has to be on it's way out in a dump.

All that being said - I'll be pissed if the Flames get him signed. If he makes it to July 1st without getting inked, the Oilers better be calling at 10:01am MST.

  10. 13 of the first 61 picks have been Swedish. Amazing.

  11. Looks like they are parking Leopold's salary in Fla - obviously more to come.

  12. Yeah, I've got a hard time understanding that Bouwmeester move. Who does Calgary get rid of? Regehr? That doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense.

  13. Deano: Leopold's a UFA on July 1st. So that doesn't help them.

And of all the big salaries on the Flames, only Jokinen's is off the books at the end of next year.

Kipper, Phaneuf, Regehr, Sarich, Langkow and Iginla all have at least three years left on their deals.

It's a flat-out head scratcher how Sutter thinks he can make the math work here to add (likely) around 6 million a year (minimum) for Bouwmeester. Because if Phaneuf is making 6.5 million, JBo has every right to ask for at least that much (well, in reality, he could ask for 10 million, because he's a way better d-man than The Dion, but that's another discussion altogether).

    ReplyDelete
  14. mc79hockey: Regehr's about the only salary there that they could hope to "dump". As has been seen, teams don't want to just take on a 5 or 6 million dollar cap hit without sending something back in return.

Their only route might be stashing Kiprusoff in the AHL (and I only say that half-jokingly, considering he wasn't even replacement level in goal last year, as has been shown).

The only logical conclusion is that Darryl Sutter cannot perform basic math.

It does if they make their moves before July 1.

  16. What's the compensatory pick for JBo going to be?

Better in next year's draft than a 3rd in this year's?

Of course you'd think Florida would be thinking about that too.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Deano: you are correct in that it allows them to manouvre a bit, but it still doesn't change the basic premise of my argument: beyond it being unwise to add another big salary to Calgary's salary strcture, I don't see how they can actually pull it off.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well dumping Jokinen is the easiest call to open the room. Then they have to make deals to replace some forwards.

Still, I can't explain the move.

    ReplyDelete
  19. HBomb

Agreed, the last thing Calgary needs is another big-ticket player, but I was just explaining why Leopold could be involved.

    ReplyDelete
  20. RiversQ: I'm almost certain that compensatory picks for losing UFA's ceased to exist with the onset of the new CBA.

Can speeds or mc79 confirm this?

    ReplyDelete
  21. If the Flames sign Jay-Bo, Tambellini was caught napping.

Obviously if he signs there, they trade Phaneuf to make the salaries work. From the Oilers standpoint, one of Visnovsky/Souray would have been moved.

The fact that he hasn't been immediately signed in encouraging.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Deano: In theory they don't, but Bouwmeester is elite.

IF they were to swap Phaneuf for a couple of future first-rounders and sign Bouwmeester for the same cap hit, I think they've made their team better.

It's basically the same thing if the Oilers were to ditch Souray to sign Bouwmeester. You're letting a pretty good player go, but turning around and filling his spot with a guy who's a cut or two above.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you think about it Calgary's position regarding Bouwmeester is very similar to Edmonton's situation. If you can justify this for Edmonton - making a big splash despite arguably not having the need and really having no cap space to make it happen - then you have to think it makes sense for CGY too.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The problem with all of the JayBo for Phaneuf and JayBo for Souray talk is that at their money, Phaneuf and Souray are not very desirable pieces in the first place. That's why I thought we'd have to give up Lubo.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Deano: Neither Phaneuf or Souray is "terrible" - their contributions may just be somewhat overrated, and there are certainly teams that would take them off the Flames' or Oilers' hands if they were out there.

It's not easy to dump any salary for nothing in return these days, however.

    ReplyDelete
  26. RiversQ: on the surface, there's no need for it, but as has been said elsewhere, Bouwmeester being available as a UFA (or a player of that calibre at that age) is a special situation.

You make that signing and figure out how to make it work in. If the Flames can sign him and have to move Regehr, it's a very smart move long-term (you've signed one guy who has a Norris nomination, albeit it undeserved and hype-based, already, and another guy who's an actual all-round tough minute defender). They'd be set for the next 15 years on the back-end.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't know if there's any value in trading for Bowm's rights, but if Calgary gets JBo, and then deals Phaneuf or other cap hits, they've really shown the management in Edmonton to be completely amateur.

This kid is the best D we could imagine getting, but we don't want him because we want to keep Souray/Visnovsky. ??? I like those two players too, but that thinking is idiotic.

No we don't want Malkin, we've already got Horcoff. Thank you anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cameron Abney.

They took a third round pick on a RW who scored 4 points in 48 games

    WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Deano, et al.

You can't deal some big contracts without taking cap money in return, but I'm pretty sure you could deal Phaneuf for usefull inexpensive players and prospects. I'm not a big fan of the guy but he's only 24 and he's got a lot of potential if he can ever get his head in the game.

Lots of teams would kill for the kid.

    ReplyDelete
  30. kris: On one hand, Calgary probably would love to keep the tandem of Bouwmeester/Phaneuf and follow an "Anaheim model" for the next decade.

However, and this is just what I've heard - Phaneuf's got an inflated head based on (perceived) early successes and is a wee bit of a locker room cancer, to the point Iginla can't stand him.

So maybe J-Bo is, in essence, his replacement. I think it's an upgrade, and if you can fetch other assets for Phaneuf, it's shrewd. Very shrewd.

  31. If the Flames pull off my goofy 'sign and trade' with Fla, I am going to be some-pissed.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Calgary is Philadelphia West. Their insanity makes more sense when you think of them that way.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh and I'd rather of had Elliot. Didn't he go 49th? *head scratcher*

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anton Lander is a interesting pick because he was Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson's linemate last season for Timra.

These two had a lot of chemistry and speed last season for Timra.
