Oilers at 121: Tyler Bunz

Mike Remmerde comments. Remmerde likes Bunz (more than Simpson, who went earlier) but also suggests that there may not be a #1 upside. Remember, we're in the 5th round now.

Stu MacGregor: "17-year old goalie who carried the mail in Medicine Hat all year. Willie Desjardins said he was one of the big reasons they were able to defeat Kootenay in the first round. He's got some battle in his game, he needs to smooth things out a little in his technique."

Freddie Chabot was key in the drafting of Bunz, he saw him recently and was impressed with how much he's improved in the last few months.

  3. Traktor:

Completely agree. What an underwhelming scouting report.

  4. good spot for a goalie. Being a starter this year should have bumped him higher on draft boards yet he goes quite late.

I wouldn't call it a wasted pick, but it doesn't seem like a smart pick to me.

  5. They did go for a goon. Nice bout with Rowat on hockeyfights...

  6. Might spell the end of Fernando now that we've got another St. Albert boy in the system.

We always have to have one on the business card, yes?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Pettersson-Wentzel still available??

    ReplyDelete
  8. So we do get Taylor and Tyler after all

    ReplyDelete
  9. Why not going with the best goalie in the Swedish AHL, Fredrik Petterson-Wentzel?

    Fuck.

  10. Never mind....ATL just took him....

  11. Smart pick.

Picks at this point are low risk, since there's little chance they'll pan out. So you take a high reward player.

As LT points out, Remmerde ranked him well amongst the goalies and had him as a mid round pick.

  12. Okay to have one wasted pick - looks like the Flames are wasting all of theirs!

  13. Enetring into the 'meh' area of the draft now. I don't think any one of us can pretend to be experts on goalies this late, but it's a good time to take one when noting their development time yadda yadda.

Wait and see approach is best here. Unfair to make any assessment on goalies until 3 or 4 years down the line.

At least he's a hometown boy with an AWESOME name! :)

  15. ESPN has some stuff here, although some of the names are missing...

    That's like saying we've just selected a #8 defenseman.

    Why?

I agree with Traktor now. Wasted pick.

  17. F- to NHL.com today. If they can afford to prop up Phoenix, why can't they afford $18/hr to hire some geek out of technical school to make their website work?

    ReplyDelete
  18. The fact that Remmerde rates him better than Kent Simpson, who Chicago took in the 2nd round, suggests that this is a decent 5th round gamble.

  20. dorito: Well, they could have taken a defender but we're at a point where the really good players are gone.

So, you look at your list and pick the next guy up. I do think the Oilers "draft for need" after the 2nd round but don't think there's a big reason to be upset about this pick.

  21. Nothing wrong with this pick - goalies are a crapshoot. Leave them till late.

SJ look like geniuses by just taking what's left (high-rated euro goalies) quite late.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The C&B boys still have two euros available in Iro Pakarainen and Victor Svedberg.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm really surprised about Kitsyn too. He's got some excellent skill and he's not even small.

I dunno. Why would you assume anyone selected this late has #1 written all over them? Anything this late is a flyer pick. Just is. The only thing that sends me is drafting a goon with no other real talents to speak of, when you can sign those guys out of the CHL at the end of their 20-year-old season at no additional cost. (So yes, if they take Cody Beach in the 7th round, I'll be upset, I don't care whose sweater he wears in the Dub.)

The only scouting report I can offer is the six games he played against Calgary in the second round, and I thought he was fine. His puck-handling gaffe cost them the series-winning goal, but on the whole, I don't think he was the reason they lost. He got hung out to dry pretty badly by his teammates for long stretches of that series.

  25. And now I sound like a twat because Beach went later in the round to St. Loo. Never mind me.

  26. doogie - I don't think where goalies are ranked @ 18 correlates at all to peak value.

Seriously - the data is worthless on goalies.

Exactly. It's just not worth getting upset over a pick like this. Talk to me when he's 25.

  28. i'm disapointed with this pick! i would have taken Fredrik Petersson-Wentzel, Louis Domingue, or Zane Gothberg all of which were ranked higher.

  29. good pick
he's still young and could develop into one of the top goalies in the nhl
plus the oilers NEED a solid netminder who does good under pressure
