Trade Deadline 2011

  1. let the fun begin. 2 channels, radio and a bunch of websites, don't have enough tv's or computers to follow everything.

sportsnet guys not placing as much value on our players as we would. scares me based on league perception what we would get in return.

  2. Lowetide, telling picture for the blog post... Does it portend that Hemsky will be reunited with Smitty?

    ReplyDelete
  3. DBO: That's great! If ST does nothing today that's not a bad thing.

However, I suspect he'll move Hemsky, Vandermeer and Smid today.

The return? Tambellini dealt Grebeshkov, Lubo and Staios last year and got in return Whitney, Aaron Johnson, Ryan Jones, a 2nd rd pick and a depth pick. The pick turned into Curtis Hamilton.

That's good, but he needs to hit a home run if he's dealing Hemsky.

  4. Over/under for number of times I will get in shit for constantly checking my phone today: 4.

Here's hoping for a few more picks for MBS with a few suspect defenders heading out.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Terry Jones: I'm betting the Oilers are the story at the trade deadline. I see at least three deals involving at least four players.

    Stauffer said maybe one trade.

Hmmm. Here's hoping Bob is correct.

    ReplyDelete
  6. oh dear. add sirius 97 for the cbc fed, it streams as well. good day to work from home

    ReplyDelete
  7. @LT,

I am with you on this one. 1 trade ... a small one, please, just a small one.

    ReplyDelete
  8. the cbc feed is now intriguing.

friedman, marek, morrison, hrudey, weekes (may kill me listening), bobby holik

    ReplyDelete
  9. I've warmed to vandermeer a bit lately. he;s a nice 5-6 dman. Any chance we resign him, or is he gone for sure

    ReplyDelete
  10. Holik is brilliant. He's something of a loose cannon in that he says things no one else will about players and teams.

    Which makes him a joy.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i have a feeling that there wont be more than 10-12 trades

    ReplyDelete
  12. on tsn feed.
Mcguire doing his usual antics...please get him off the screen.

    ReplyDelete
  13. SumOil: try listening to cbc, bobby holik = painful accent.

    ReplyDelete
  14. haha there is going to be Mike Milbury on CBC. so its either Mcguire or Milbury!!! damn!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can't see Lombardi caving in on Schenn.

The only way Hemsky gets dealt is if another team comes out of the woodwork.

    ReplyDelete
  16. IF this picture happens... the Kings have themselves a temporary fan this playoff year. Genius.

    ReplyDelete
  17. A quick and dirty poll: How many people are against the Oilers being active today for hockey reasons and how many because you're petrified that management will remove all doubt about their ineptitude?

I'm firmly in the latter camp. If I had confidence in these guys I could better see the merits of a 27 or 83 deal, although I think they're still outweighed by competitive reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  18. dreger tweeting Richards only going to waive to one team. not sure who, but Dreger guesses it's the Rangers

    ReplyDelete
  19. Riv - count me in the "scared of ineptness" camp.

If they were smart, we'd empty the junk drawer for picks and maybr grab a vet who's paid too much and needs a shot to bounce back.

    ReplyDelete
  20. On another note, very thankful for westjet seatback tv on the flight to Palm Springs later this am.

    ReplyDelete
  21. RQ - agreed - worried that they will not get value moving a big asset.

Also worried that if they do make a move they don't/can't sign any vets for next season and the average age is younger than the Oil Kings because these guys think kids should learn on the job, just like the boys on the bus.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @RiversQ ...

My concern is just magic beans in return and the team sucks even worse next year due to less of a veteran presence.

    ReplyDelete
  23. to add to the confusion of what to follow. at 8 am, espn.com has live chat with burnside, melrose, lebrun and hradek. dang, need to buy one more computer and move another tv in.

    ReplyDelete
  24. SportsNet now has OTT going after Hemsky?

    Wtf?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I wonder if anything gets done on the blue today that does not bring back an immediate player with the injuries.

Unless there's someone worth picking up on the waiver wire.

Hoping that Hemsky is still here after the deadline.

    ReplyDelete
  26. sportsnet speculation: penner may fit in Ottawa. for jared cowen and someone else, maybe Foligno.

    ReplyDelete
  27. and Maclean is crazy. a d prospect and Foligno too much for Hemsky or Penner. Man, I hate doug maclean.

    ReplyDelete
  28. DBO - I disagree Doug MacLean is not crazy...

    ...just stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  29. On another side note - TSN going to 2 redheads for the late Sportscentre/am loop makes me smile; even if the one has a serious oot-and-aboot accent.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm going back and forth between CBC and TSN and then I'll drop in to SN for comedic relief.

I'd like to watch CBC but that goddamn stupe Healy is lurking around and I can't stand him.

And, yeah, Holik has a really terrible accent but he's insightful as well.

I should have live-blogged this over at Ty's place and just had some fun but here's some interesting things I've heard so far:

    - Healy talking about Boyes being dealt because guys who are impending UFA better be ready.

Friedman points out that Boyes has another year left:)

    - Mike Johnson says that Lupul is a really good guy in the room.

So, yeah, Bob Stauffer and Mike Johnson have a Freaky Friday thing going.

    - Former Leafs assistant GM Jeff Jackson harping on the year they picked up Yannick Perrault because their hands were tied.

Did I mention Healy is hateful?

    ReplyDelete
  31. TSN=Leafs TV
    SN=Moron TV

Doug McLean said he wouldn't trade for Hemsky because he doesn't try hard enough or go to the hard area.

    Lordy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Doug McLean needs to be shot with a ball of his own shit.

Comments like "Hemsky doesn't go to the tough areas" from that bag of hot air are exactly why I won't be on Sportsnet at all today. My TV will be fixed on TSN for the next 7.5 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  33. colorado said no to burke for liles since the leafs asked for a pick as well for liles. Burke has balls, I'll say that.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Woodguy,

You forgot CBC = Leaf and Canuck tv as well

    ReplyDelete
  35. Cam: I mentioned this to Ty last night but if either of 27 or 83 are unlikely to resign then today might be the day when the best value would be available trade-wise.

But I don't have any faith in a Lowe-helmed org so that makes me very nervous.

I'd like to hang on to both and then we make some moves in the summer and both guys start to believe something good just might happen here.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Locked the PC up once already. Four simultaneous streams is too many.

    ReplyDelete
  37. dreger-mackenzie-miller: best 3 guys on breaking deals. biggest reason why tsn wins deadline day every time.

    ReplyDelete
  38. CBC decided that having just Healy around wasn't making the place dumb enough so they placed a call to Greg Millen.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So how many trades are people expecting the Oilers to make today?

Nothing would really surprise me. As few sellers as there are, I don't even think I'd be surprised to see EDM make 5 trades if they are wanting to clear some roster spots, money, if they are setting the price high now but willing to take a bit less to move some guys. I also wouldn't be that surprised to see very few, or none. Who knows?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm on the fence.

Half of me is apprehensive based on the ineptitude of management, and half based on the fact that rarely do sellers get equal value back, based on the randomness of prospects panning out.

Personally, I'd rather see picks come back more than prospects, since I trust MB Stu MacGregor more than the rest of management and scouting.

    ReplyDelete
  41. McLean and Milbury are absolute disasters as GM's but are allowed to spew their ignorance on TV.

Why would any sane person take what they say as fact. They're the epitome of broken clocks who are at least right 2x a day.

    ReplyDelete
  42. this nearly escaped the ire of the sphere but what in the jesus was Duhatschek talking about the other day when he said 83 disappears for stretches at a time?

we're not talking about Kristian Huselsis here, bud.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Rick: If they are thinking of acquiring certain prospects, why wouldn't they be consulting with Stu anyways? Especially if the player is still in junior, college, or Europe?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Is LeBrun doing anything live or is twitter as good as we get for him?

    ReplyDelete
  45. word is weiss will only waive the nmc if it's a deal to TO.

    Tallon's asking for Kadri and a 1st.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anyone know what channel is CBC Bold on Expressvu? I can't seem to find it on the guide.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Dennis: Hemsky will have his off-nights, as will ANY player, but the thing about him is I have a lot of trouble remembering him having two "bad" games in a row.

In fact, if he has a noticeable off-night, a lot of the time the next game will be a multiple point night, or at the very least, a night where he'll get an assist and I'll walk away saying he could have easily had three.

So yeah, this is why I'm firmly opposed to dealing Hemsky - I don't know if other teams get just how good the guy is. No, he's not a superstar, but he's in the next tier down.

    ReplyDelete
  48. McLean says Richards wants eight year deal from Dallas.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm only watching TV at this point (on crackberry) and the two CBC channels I know of are showing cartoons.

The cartoon characters have better insight than McLean.

    Is CBC just streaming online?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Rick: Really? I want a prospect - you know way, way more about a prospect, especially one with some pro hockey experience.

I know this is blasphemy around here, but I don't think MacGregor is really that good. He's been given a tremendous opportunity in terms of fantastic pick position and a lot of picks especially in the top sixty. Honestly, I'm not sure he's much better than Prendergast. Definitely average to above average, but I wouldn't be taking picks over prospects because of him.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm scared that management will make a "big" trade. That's definitely outside my comfort zone with this group.

I actually hope that Terry Jones is right. 3-4 trades means minor moves with bit players. 1 trade means we see Smyth moved at the deadline and the team inexplicably holding on to Petr Sykora.

Then again, Stauffer is more "in" with this management and ownership than Jones now that Katz is running the show. Probably not a good sign for Hemsky fans.

    ReplyDelete
  52. my hopes for today:
    - vandermeer for solid pick
    - cogliano for a solid tw way giy or even a Chris Neil type. Time to start adding missing pieces. Or you use him as a package in a bigger deal.
    - Smid = ok with him moving. Blum from Nashville would be nice
    - Jones = either resign him for cheap or he moves for a 3rd or 4th rd pick.
    - Foster = for anything

And that is it. keep Hemmer and Penner unless you get a huge deal.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The frustrating thing about those comments by Maclean and the article by duhatschek is how they're just the standard narrative used to describe skilled Europeans. Just something to throw out there when you've got nothing to say.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I should add - it's early still for MacGregor. If 75% of his picks from the past couple of years are hits, then maybe I'll change my tune. Right now I see a guy who has been given a whole lot of very good bullets and hasn't wasted them for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  55. lol. CBC talking about how Gagner hasn't been given enough PP time. LOL. Man old goalies are annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Woodguy: TSN is streaming their channel live on TSN.ca in the tradecentre section. It's a good quality stream as well.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Dennis -

If you want to do a liveblog, I'll set something up on the site for you. I'm busy today but I'd pop in and out.

Re: Vandermeer - I've been surprised that everyone's been so impressed with him - team after team gave up on him.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Also: I'm hoping Jones goes so they can't give him the two year $4MM deal.

    ReplyDelete
  59. What DBO said.

And somebody else mentioned it earlier: dump the junk, nothing more.

You're not going to get full value for Penner or Hemsky today.

The draft is the time to do it if at all.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don't know how good MacGregor is, but I do think it's too early to assume too much. It certainly looks pretty good now.

But to play Devil's advocate, it's early, the Abney pick was disconcerting. One could argue that Hall and Paajarvi were "easy" consensus picks - though I understand the counterpoint that he still had to make them. Eberle was a great pick, but there were lots of people that liked Eberle at that spot.

    ReplyDelete
  61. SK - if you can't get full value for Hemmer or Penner today, the draft will be worse.

They will be much lower in the pecking order then.

    ReplyDelete
  62. speeds: I tink macgregor's real value was 2nd rd picks from last year, the hartikanen pick. He seems to find real value in rd 2. Yeah there have been seeming hiccups, but last years 2nd rd picks makes it look like we had 4 1st rd picks if the draft was redone today.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Dennis: Yeah that Hemsky/Kovalev piece was utter shit. After reading it I desperately wanted someone in the MSM to call him on it. Get him to back it up with some evidence. Say, how many pointless streaks Hemsky has had since the lockout? How many greater than 5 games? I'd guess it's a lot fewer than he thinks.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Man, TSN piling onto the Sens for the benefit of the Leafs fans.

    ReplyDelete
  65. TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
LAK Justin Williams signs a four year deal worth $14.6M .

    ReplyDelete
  66. Which teams need to dump salary in order to swing deals.

I'm hoping the Oilers use their cap space to pick up some expensive expiring cap hits to help out some contenders while picking up some extra picks in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Micheal Farber's eyes make him look like an alien wearing a Micheal Farber suit.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ty: Yeah, sure.

Let me know when it's ready.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Re: Vandermeer - I've been surprised that everyone's been so impressed with him - team after team gave up on him.

Well, it's about expectations - a lot of us thought we were getting Strudwick 2.0, and in fact he's actually looked like a 6D on the worst team in the NHL.

    ReplyDelete
  70. espn live chat:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/5115/live-chat-nhl-trade-deadline-10-a-m-et

    ReplyDelete
  71. Deano - I should have said during the summer. The players you get today are 3 years away from helping this team get into the playoffs (if you get the right ones).
The players you get in the summer may help you next year.

    ReplyDelete
  72. tsn good guys on Oilers:
strong chance Hemsky goes. asking price is enormous. LA and others may have to step up.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Dreger says he figures 83 is going and that's that.

He's the #1 guy that the Oilers are pimping.

So, we have that to look forwards to.

I predict we get back Clifford and Tuebert.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Rick: I want a prospect - you know way, way more about a prospect, especially one with some pro hockey experience.... (SMBM is) definitely average to above average, but I wouldn't be taking picks over prospects because of him.

Maybe its just me, but I trust Stu not to screw up a pick more than I trust Tambi-loweni to select a young proepect from another organization.

    ReplyDelete
  75. when this is over I either want real value for 83 or someone to confirm that there was no chance he was gonna sign here.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Maybe its just me, but I trust Stu not to screw up a pick more than I trust Tambi-loweni to select a young proepect from another organization.

If it's an amateur prospect, it's within Stu's jurisdiction anyway.

I agree with RiversQ about MBS, incidentally - I think what we're looking at is the equivalent of a really good player with a really good PDO.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I think that's a pretty fair deal for LA with Justin Williams. The last two seasons he's had nice numbers at ES (1.98, 2.53 P/60) and on the PP (4.24, 3.94 P/60). He plays the second-tier toughs for LA and is a plus player for the relative measures of corsi.

The concern with him is likely injury or regression to a lower level of scoring, but I think we fairly see that reflected in his average cap hit.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I predict we get back Clifford and Tuebert.

    Plus Schenn?

The only way that deal is palatable is if those two are add-ons. Clifford and Teubert for Hemsky would be worse than the Smyth deal and would be Tambellini's second "immediately fireable offense" (the first being the ReKhab contract).

    ReplyDelete
  79. Here's a tweet from Dustin Nielson that might surprise some, in particular MC given his post in this thread:

    http://twitter.com/nielson1260/status/42237783405903872

    ReplyDelete
  80. Well L.A. committed to Justin Williams so they can't say they're worried about Hemsky's health.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Here's a tweet from Dustin Nielson that might surprise some, in particular MC given his post in this thread:

Doesn't have the ring of truth to it, to me - they've had a the whole season to extend him, and they figure out whether he wants to extend at their number on deadline day?

    ReplyDelete
  82. re Jones: i like that idea. cheap extension, maybe $1-$1.25 mill or so for 2 or 3 yrs

    ReplyDelete
  83. My buddy who works for the Oil said Old Man Lowe is taking a break from pancake breakfasts to show Tambi and the youngbloods how trade deadline day is supposed to work.

    Prepare for Smyth 2.0

    ReplyDelete
  84. SS - leverage - trying to get Jones for a low number.

    ReplyDelete
  85. burnside from espn: Dudley said Bogosian only moves if a young talent in nhl comes back. Does Gagner fit that bill?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Gagner is a talent and he's very young so I'd say yes.

    ReplyDelete
  87. SS - leverage - trying to get Jones for a low number.

You think that makes him more likely to agree to a deal? I don't. He's coming off a strong season by the counting numbers, so I see no reason why he should be afraid of UFA status, and he might like to play in the playoffs. I don't see the Oilers as having any leverage.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Of course, I was concerned that Ryan Potulny was due for an overpay after last season, so what the hell do I know?

    ReplyDelete
  89. HB: it was me making a joke also being somewhat serious because those are the things that always happen to Oilers fans.

Mike: I don't believe that twitter just because it makes too much fucking sense.

I wonder if 28 can be a good PKer - i know by the eye he creates a lot of PK chances - and a value contract as a 9th or 10th forward but I wouldn't give him a big payday and I would move him today if I knew he wouldn't return.

So, basically, I would be doing what this Twitter says.

So, yeah, I don't think that's the kind of stuff the brass believes in.

    ReplyDelete
  90. SS -

This is speculation, but maybe they've been quietly negotiating for awhile with the trade deadline as a deadline of sorts?

    ReplyDelete
  91. mark stuart resigns 3 yrs for $5.1 mill as per sportsnet. good deal for atl

    ReplyDelete
  92. I saw a tweet somewhere saying NSH is shopping Ellis and Watson. Not sure I buy that, but Watson is having a poor year in the OHL, I think I remember reading somewhere the Oilers liked him at last year's draft.

Could he be coming back in some sort of Smid to NSH deal?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Dennis: I'd suggest not joking about such things. It would seem like "tempting fate" and such.

    ReplyDelete
  94. This is speculation, but maybe they've been quietly negotiating for awhile with the trade deadline as a deadline of sorts?

Could be. I'd have thought that today is hectic enough that they'd have set the deadline to, say, a couple of days ago.

I'm in agreement with the general view that re-upping Jones as a fourth liner for fourth line money is fine (as long as we purge some of our other fourth liners so he's not bumped up to the third line), and that we should get whatever we can for him if that's not in the cards.

    ReplyDelete
  95. as per mackenzie:

NSH will make some noise today. Two needs, a top 6 forward and a defenceman. May only get 1 of 2. Talking to EDM about both (Hemsky/Smid).

    ReplyDelete
  96. SB: I hope that was just a joke.

Though it did make me laugh:)

I feel like this whole day is about waking 83's career as an Oiler.

How will the media react once we deal off the latest young vet?

I predict Terry Jones will be the only voice of reason.

and who would have predicted that a couple of months ago?

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm not kidding. Lowe is working the phones this very minute.

    ReplyDelete
  98. that is a lot of d locked up in atlanta. maybe bogosian is available. gagner could be the basis.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Not sure if FPB is around, but Gabe Desjardins seems to disagree with him about Phillips.

    From Twitter:

Scott Cullen: I don't get Phillips signing. Possible he'd get more $$ as FA, but what team would give him no-trade after a season in which he's -26?

Gabe Desjardins: A team that recognizes the predictive value of a three-year average? A team that understands quality of competition?

No comment on who's right, because I'm not the kind of commenter who "knows things" or "makes substantive points".

    ReplyDelete
  100. Meanwhile, Bob McKenzie's tweeting concert news.

    ReplyDelete
  101. @ speeds

i would stay away from both those prospects. also i remember tht oilers liked ellis too and thnk god MPS fell to us

    ReplyDelete
  102. while i like the phillips signing from ott's point. i dont see it from Phillips point of view

    ReplyDelete
  103. tht -26 can almost exclusively atrributed to his terrible on ice sv%

    ReplyDelete
  104. Why would you do that Steve? Now fpb is going to argue on here with the spirit of Desjardins.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Ellis seems like he'll be another MAB. Oilfans don't like MABs.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Lowe's in on the discussions?

My worst fears are coming to fruition.

God help us all, but we should prepare for the "we wanted three assets for Hemsky and two assets for Penner" speech later today.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Why would you do that Steve? Now fpb is going to argue on here with the spirit of Desjardins.

Discord around here makes me sad, except where I create it.

    ReplyDelete
  108. What would the Oilers be after if moving a package of Hemsky and Smid to NSH?

I would imagine Colin Wilson, not sure that he'd be available however?

Blum, Watson, Josi, Wilson, Franson, Dumont (potential salary dump to improve rest of return), who else?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Brian Elliott is probably the worst goalie in the NHL. (Yes even worse then Khabby) so nobody is going to look good in front of that.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I was hoping the Kings would pick up both Reasoner and Dvorak considering there also probably gonna get 83.

Also, I hope Reasoner doesn't wind up in Van.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I'm not kidding. Lowe is working the phones this very minute.

Yeah, but his phone is disconnected. They just let him pretend to make calls all day. "Right now I'm working on a big 3 way deal with Hartford and Winnipeg. We've got to clear salary for younger players, because we just can't compete with these big market clubs."

    ReplyDelete
  112. I want Vancouver to do nothing. I want Luongo to cost them another playoffs and I want Canuck fans to realize they're stuck with LOOOOOUUUUU!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Does Pat Quinn do mimicry well? Is he the guy on the other end of the line?

    ReplyDelete
  114. lol Kris. This is where I make my joke that Tambi would be more effective if his phone made outbound calls.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Kind of hope Atlanta gets Reasoner. They'd look good in the stretch run.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Jay Onright just said "Edmonton Journal reporting a Hemsky trade? Is this true?"

As far as I can tell from the Journal's site, no.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I wonder what Florida is looking for Weiss.

Oilfans of talked about that guy for so long that it would seem a shame he didn't become an Oiler.

    ReplyDelete
  118. My favourite quote from that article I just linked: "[Reasoner]'s willing to block shots with his face, he's that kind of a detail guy."

I do not think that "detail guy" means what Raffi Torres thinks it means.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Does Pat Quinn do mimicry well?

Well, Quinn's the only guy I can think of who is as fat and pink as Burke. Maybe, Quinn could video phone Lowe and pretend he's Burke with laryngitis. They could discuss trading a 1st to the Oilers for Comrie and Pisani. Lowe would never be the wiser.

    ReplyDelete

Nah, that gig would be up once Lowe contacted Comrie and demanded that he provide the first rounder.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Also, Quinn does a mean Jimmy Stewart, but his Sean Connery and his John Wayne are pretty weak. He's pretty good at Walken, though.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Oh God baby is puking on me and unhappy and mommy is the store!

I imagine my issue is the same one in the Oiler war room today.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I'd like to see Marty go to a team with a shot at a run. I always felt vaguely bad for him that he missed out on 2006. This was particularly true given that the Bruins' acquisition of him was nonsensical.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Maybe Boston will get Marty again in their never ending quest to have all the centers.

  125. Heres hoping this deadline for the Oilers is as uneventful as the Oscars.

A couple of things, one I keep hearing how Oilers will never have more value from Hemsky then right now but isnt there value in knowing if he will sign or not and at what price? if you wait until the summer and find out he is willing to re-sign at decent number then as Charlie Scheen says your WINNING.

If not you can trade him to a team that gets a full season from him and can negotiate a LT deal of thir own with him. There are always teams on July 1 that miss out on their FA target and overpay in a trade.

Also there seems to be some talk about moving 89 but if that were the case why would they have been saddeling him with 91 and 23 bscially devaluing him while 13 plays with the future? A 13 move would give me some hope in ST in terms of having a plan and executing a pump and dump otherwise the last month or so doesnt make any sense to me.

In terms of moving D, I would only move Smid for another D that plays right away and would be looking to move 26 for anything. 2 should have some value and there is no reason he should be an Oiler at days end.

In the end if i get to where my 83 jersey to the Oilers game here in van at the end of season today will be WINNING!

  126. Lowe: "I'm on the phone dealing Isbister to John Wayne and Christopher Walken."

  127. That "Protect this house" meme going around hockey is stupid. (I know it's advertising)

    ReplyDelete
  128. Rishaug: "Theo Peckham got dinged up in a fight last night... can Oilers afford to move Smid now?"

Huh - he has a point. If Peckman's hurt and we move Smid, there's a very real danger that our defense will not be very good!!!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Rishaug saying the Oilers are going to have to make at least a couple trades based purely on "optics".

Are Oilers fans really that shallow that they'd demand moves "just for the hell of it"?

Actually, do I even want to know the answer to that?

    ReplyDelete
  130. Huh - he has a point. If Peckman's hurt and we move Smid, there's a very real danger that our defense will not be very good!!!

Yeah, you don't want to put your playoff hopes at risk.

  131. Kris: that line about Lowe working a deal with Hartford and Winnipeg was just goddamn gold:)

Ty: Yeah, why didn't the B's take a prospect that year? Picking up a vet like that made Zero sense.

I don't think he was ever in their plans.

BTW, looking at that piece on Raffi from the Van papers and it's the first time I've seen anyone allude to his substance abuse problems, ie the always ominous "demons."

  132. Ray Ferraro giving credit for Hemsky's compete level and willingness to go to the tough areas. MacT backs him up by saying Hemsky is a "big game player".

THIS is why TSN blows Sportsnet out of the water (in spite of Maguire questioning why Hemsky hasn't "broken through" and hit 30 goals).

  133. Wow -140 comments by 9am.

Doesn't anyone have any work to do this morning?

  134. Pierre on Hemsky: Is he a better center than wing?

Has he ever watched a fucking game. Moron.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Just give Lowe an Onion article announcing the cap is gone and the Oilers have no money. That would help.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Ray Ferraro giving credit for Hemsky's compete level and willingness to go to the tough areas. MacT backs him up by saying Hemsky is a "big game player".

Though MacT also said that Hemsky's not the most consistent guy, which is just going to feed the morons. Quick, get him talking about Penner instead!

  137. Oh God baby is puking on me and unhappy and mommy is the store!

Walk and bounce, walk and bounce....

any of you with kids know what I am talking about!

    ReplyDelete
  138. Yeah that Pierre question was hilarious. MacT looked at him like he was fucking nuts, which is how he should always be looked at.

  139. The thing with Sportsnet panel is they have no idea on western teams.

They go by boxcars and highlights thats it.

  140. someone turn on CBC Bold and tell me Jeff Jackson couldn't have sold his lips to Brad Pitt's wife:)

Oh, Healy's talking nonsense again so I must go back to TSN

    ReplyDelete
  141. Dave Hodge saying the Oilers "must be changed" because it hasn't changed other than drafting Taylor Hall.

Ummm...yeah...getting rid of Moreau, Staios, O'Sullivan, and Souray was nothing.

Steve Simmons was the voice of reason saying "why trade their best player in Hemsky?", right up until he called Smid "the Oilers best defenseman".

Farber and Duhatschek seem to have their heads screwed on straight, mostly - the comment that the Oilers are not under pressure to do anything today shows some sensibility.

  143. @Dennis: Healy and Millen give us ex-goalies a bad name.

Of the two Millen is just annoying but Healy makes me want to go right into my big screen and throttle him.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Steve: Then I have a hard time figuring how he can just ignores is own numbers.

FLA just pulled a swift one on ATL there.

Usually you get the Dvoraks for a 2nd round pick max. Not a guy who's producing more than him and 23.

    Jesus.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Simmonds seems to lead the "pander to Leafs' fans by piling on every other team" discussion.

He's a waste of time - even on a day with 10 hours of coverage.

    ReplyDelete
  146. My goodness Pierre looks stupid from the comments.

    Too bad I got a class at 1 to 3 =/.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Button actually nailed the Oilers situation best.

I also agree with Hodge that the Oilers can't just keep losing and getting high picks. (We're all saying that)

The Maguire/Mac-T exchange wasn't as bad as people are making it sound. They also have to explain what sort of player Hemsky is to the hoards of easterners that are watching and never heard of him.

    ReplyDelete
  148. For those of you who want to keep your 'tradecenter' window 'on top' while you work, I love this little program. I have used it for years and it works without any problems. You just shrink the window down to whatever the screen size is and then pin it in place.

  149. Still catching up in the thread so maybe somebody has already mentioned this but CBC Bold is covering the deadline. On Shaw here in Edmonton that's Channel 96.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Kind of annoys me when media say the sun belt teams have "strong" attendance. Then I hear from a Bolts fan who has lower bowl season tickets for 279 bucks.

My fucking junior season tix are more then that.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Interesting that Duthie seems to be the only guy that recognizes goalies aren't worth much anymore. Not because it isn't still the most important position but because decent goalies are all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
  152. from espn chat:

Pierre LeBrun: Oilers still asking for lots in return for Hesmky. They want Schenn from LA

    ReplyDelete
  153. Would the oilers take a package of Simmonds, Bernier, and a #1?

Or is it Schenn or bust??

    ReplyDelete
  154. While I agree that losing for another 2 or 3 years doesn't seem like a great plan, there's no reason to change course now at the deadline. A long as they don't shed 27 or 83, of the guys rumored, moving guys like Smid, Cogliano, Vandy, Foster, Jones for prospects/picks doesn't really hurt the team next year if they are looking to try to win because they can find players to replace those guys, via UFA , trade, etc

    ReplyDelete
  155. @SB

$6.82 per game? That can't be an accurate figure.

  156. Informal Poll to Pass the Time:

Who here is actually "at work" today (note that I did not say "working" for a reason), and who knew better and just took the day off?

I'm in the latter category - delayed my return to Fort Mac by one day (even though I've already been gone for 20 days due to this stupid mono recovery time) in order to watch and see what happens. Seemed like the "ethical" thing to do....

    ReplyDelete
  157. Jim Hughson just made a comment that was gold, "What's the point of having a 4th line you're afraid to put out, what's the point of having bruisers if they can't go out there and actually bruise the players you want them to."

Tambellini and Lowe should be strapped down to chairs Clockwork Orange style while that clip from Hughson plays over and over on a loop.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Ferraro is really pushing Lombardi's buttons here. He said it with more tact then I would because you can only jerk off to your prospect lists for so long before you find yourself without a job.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Fuck, I been watching for an hour and TSN is still unveiling new panels.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Kris: Lowe on phone w/Winnipeg is the best line of the season.

$6.82 per game? That can't be an accurate figure.

It is very much true. However, he already paid for next years because he got a letter saying they would be going up substantially if he waited.

And Tampa is a pretty decent franchise compared to Atlanta and Phoenix.

    ReplyDelete
  163. I wish Ferraro was still doing Color for the Oilers. He and Simpson are simply in a different league than everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  164. I work in 1.5 hours but I have tvs and internet that I will be watching.

  165. Who here is actually "at work" today (note that I did not say "working" for a reason), and who knew better and just took the day off?

At work - I've come to realize that visability trumps actual product.

    (Well, short-term at least)

  166. Bruce: I'm waiting for them to go to Duthie, Dunigan, Climie and Schultz for some analysis from the CFL perspective. At that point, we'll know it's overkill.

    ReplyDelete
  172. one of the things we haven't talked about is by virtue of all this talk about how the Oilers are asking for high prices in return for 83, they are gonna look even Worse than usual if they get hosed like they normally do.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I'm waiting for them to go to Duthie, Dunigan, Climie and Schultz for some analysis from the CFL perspective. At that point, we'll know it's overkill.

I dunno, Schultzy could make some good trade picks!

  174. Hemsky and Smid at the rink for practice...Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  175. That is a sweet mug. *Whips out credit cards*

    ReplyDelete
  176. that doesnt mean shit...so far. I think Oilers dont want to throw around unnecessary speculation

    ReplyDelete
  177. The talking heads are desperate for a narrative, some content. It's like their Moby Dick.

Really they could've shelved the coverage till 9am MST.

    ReplyDelete
  178. david steckal has left washington's practice. may mean nothing, but who knows. he may have been moved.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Healy: "Is Khabibulin the guy going forward in Edmonton?"

Craig Simpson "Khabibulin is the guy if you want to finish last"

    Ha!

Simpson did say that neither 27 or 83 were first line players on a cup contending team.

I think 83 is, not sure 27 is.

    ReplyDelete
  180. I think Hemsky and Ovechkin would be on my first line.

    ReplyDelete
  181. I do wish the fucking talking heads would stop calling Schenn "lots".

    They're buying into Lomabardi's narrative.

And it would make up for calling Hemmer a pussy.

    ReplyDelete
  182. It's gonna be nice when Calgary gives up picks, etc. today and then misses the playoffs again.

    ReplyDelete
  183. #Caps trade 3rd in 2011 and Jake Hauswirth to FLA for defenseman Dennis Wideman.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Caps get Wideman from FLA, not sure what's going back.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Simpson did say that neither 27 or 83 were first line players on a cup contending team.

I think either could be if the fit is good.

The suggestion that Hemksy is not is laughable.

I think Penner's play raises significantly when the games matter - he was a powerhouse last time he was in the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Milbury asks if Hemsky or Penner are even top 6 on a contending team.

Puh-leeze. The one thing Milbury is good for is making all those fucking goalies look brilliant by comparison.
