A quick and dirty poll: How many people are against the Oilers being active today for hockey reasons and how many because you're petrified that management will remove all doubt about their ineptitude?
I'm firmly in the latter camp. If I had confidence in these guys I could better see the merits of a 27 or 83 deal, although I think they're still outweighed by competitive reasons.

Nothing would really surprise me. As few sellers as there are, I don't even think I'd be surprised to see EDM make 5 trades if they are wanting to clear some roster spots, money, if they are setting the price high now but willing to take a bit less to move some guys. I also wouldn't be that surprised to see very few, or none. Who knows?
Half of me is apprehensive based on the ineptitude of management, and half based on the fact that rarely do sellers get equal value back, based on the randomness of prospects panning out.
Personally, I'd rather see picks come back more than prospects, since I trust MB Stu MacGregor more than the rest of management and scouting.

I know this is blasphemy around here, but I don't think MacGregor is really that good. He's been given a tremendous opportunity in terms of fantastic pick position and a lot of picks especially in the top sixty. Honestly, I'm not sure he's much better than Prendergast. Definitely average to above average, but I wouldn't be taking picks over prospects because of him.
I'm scared that management will make a "big" trade. That's definitely outside my comfort zone with this group.
I actually hope that Terry Jones is right. 3-4 trades means minor moves with bit players. 1 trade means we see Smyth moved at the deadline and the team inexplicably holding on to Petr Sykora.
Then again, Stauffer is more "in" with this management and ownership than Jones now that Katz is running the show. Probably not a good sign for Hemsky fans.

The frustrating thing about those comments by Maclean and the article by duhatschek is how they're just the standard narrative used to describe skilled Europeans. Just something to throw out there when you've got nothing to say.
I should add - it's early still for MacGregor. If 75% of his picks from the past couple of years are hits, then maybe I'll change my tune. Right now I see a guy who has been given a whole lot of very good bullets and hasn't wasted them for the most part.
I don't know how good MacGregor is, but I do think it's too early to assume too much. It certainly looks pretty good now.
But to play Devil's advocate, it's early, the Abney pick was disconcerting. One could argue that Hall and Paajarvi were "easy" consensus picks - though I understand the counterpoint that he still had to make them. Eberle was a great pick, but there were lots of people that liked Eberle at that spot.
speeds: I tink macgregor's real value was 2nd rd picks from last year, the hartikanen pick. He seems to find real value in rd 2. Yeah there have been seeming hiccups, but last years 2nd rd picks makes it look like we had 4 1st rd picks if the draft was redone today.
Dennis: Yeah that Hemsky/Kovalev piece was utter shit. After reading it I desperately wanted someone in the MSM to call him on it. Get him to back it up with some evidence. Say, how many pointless streaks Hemsky has had since the lockout? How many greater than 5 games? I'd guess it's a lot fewer than he thinks.
Which teams need to dump salary in order to swing deals.
I'm hoping the Oilers use their cap space to pick up some expensive expiring cap hits to help out some contenders while picking up some extra picks in the process.

Well, it's about expectations - a lot of us thought we were getting Strudwick 2.0, and in fact he's actually looked like a 6D on the worst team in the NHL.
Deano - I should have said during the summer. The players you get today are 3 years away from helping this team get into the playoffs (if you get the right ones). The players you get in the summer may help you next year.

Maybe its just me, but I trust Stu not to screw up a pick more than I trust Tambi-loweni to select a young proepect from another organization.
I think that's a pretty fair deal for LA with Justin Williams. The last two seasons he's had nice numbers at ES (1.98, 2.53 P/60) and on the PP (4.24, 3.94 P/60). He plays the second-tier toughs for LA and is a plus player for the relative measures of corsi.
The concern with him is likely injury or regression to a lower level of scoring, but I think we fairly see that reflected in his average cap hit.
The only way that deal is palatable is if those two are add-ons. Clifford and Teubert for Hemsky would be worse than the Smyth deal and would be Tambellini's second "immediately fireable offense" (the first being the ReKhab contract).

I'd like to see Marty go to a team with a shot at a run. I always felt vaguely bad for him that he missed out on 2006. This was particularly true given that the Bruins' acquisition of him was nonsensical.

A couple of things, one I keep hearing how Oilers will never have more value from Hemsky then right now but isnt there value in knowing if he will sign or not and at what price? if you wait until the summer and find out he is willing to re-sign at decent number then as Charlie Scheen says your WINNING.
If not you can trade him to a team that gets a full season from him and can negotiate a LT deal of thir own with him. There are always teams on July 1 that miss out on their FA target and overpay in a trade.
Also there seems to be some talk about moving 89 but if that were the case why would they have been saddeling him with 91 and 23 bscially devaluing him while 13 plays with the future? A 13 move would give me some hope in ST in terms of having a plan and executing a pump and dump otherwise the last month or so doesnt make any sense to me.
In terms of moving D, I would only move Smid for another D that plays right away and would be looking to move 26 for anything. 2 should have some value and there is no reason he should be an Oiler at days end.

For those of you who want to keep your 'tradecenter' window 'on top' while you work, I love this little program. I have used it for years and it works without any problems. You just shrink the window down to whatever the screen size is and then pin it in place.

Interesting that Duthie seems to be the only guy that recognizes goalies aren't worth much anymore. Not because it isn't still the most important position but because decent goalies are all over the place.
While I agree that losing for another 2 or 3 years doesn't seem like a great plan, there's no reason to change course now at the deadline. A long as they don't shed 27 or 83, of the guys rumored, moving guys like Smid, Cogliano, Vandy, Foster, Jones for prospects/picks doesn't really hurt the team next year if they are looking to try to win because they can find players to replace those guys, via UFA , trade, etc

One could argue that Hall and Paajarvi were "easy" consensus picks - though I understand the counterpoint that he still had to make them. Eberle was a great pick, but there were lots of people that liked Eberle at that spot.
SK - if you can't get full value for Hemmer or Penner today, the draft will be worse.

speeds: I tink macgregor's real value was 2nd rd picks from last year, the hartikanen pick. He seems to find real value in rd 2. Yeah there have been seeming hiccups, but last years 2nd rd picks makes it look like we had 4 1st rd picks if the draft was redone today.

I agree with RiversQ about MBS, incidentally - I think what we're looking at is the equivalent of a really good player with a really good PDO.
I think that's a pretty fair deal for LA with Justin Williams. The last two seasons he's had nice numbers at ES (1.98, 2.53 P/60) and on the PP (4.24, 3.94 P/60). He plays the second-tier toughs for LA and is a plus player for the relative measures of corsi.

The only way that deal is palatable is if those two are add-ons. Clifford and Teubert for Hemsky would be worse than the Smyth deal and would be Tambellini's second "immediately fireable offense" (the first being the ReKhab contract).

I'm in agreement with the general view that re-upping Jones as a fourth liner for fourth line money is fine (as long as we purge some of our other fourth liners so he's not bumped up to the third line), and that we should get whatever we can for him if that's not in the cards.

ReplyDeleteA couple of things, one I keep hearing how Oilers will never have more value from Hemsky then right now but isnt there value in knowing if he will sign or not and at what price? if you wait until the summer and find out he is willing to re-sign at decent number then as Charlie Scheen says your WINNING.
If not you can trade him to a team that gets a full season from him and can negotiate a LT deal of thir own with him. There are always teams on July 1 that miss out on their FA target and overpay in a trade.
Also there seems to be some talk about moving 89 but if that were the case why would they have been saddeling him with 91 and 23 bscially devaluing him while 13 plays with the future? A 13 move would give me some hope in ST in terms of having a plan and executing a pump and dump otherwise the last month or so doesnt make any sense to me.
In terms of moving D, I would only move Smid for another D that plays right away and would be looking to move 26 for anything. 2 should have some value and there is no reason he should be an Oiler at days end.
In the end if i get to where my 83 jersey to the Oilers game here in van at the end of season today will be WINNING!

While I agree that losing for another 2 or 3 years doesn't seem like a great plan, there's no reason to change course now at the deadline. A long as they don't shed 27 or 83, of the guys rumored, moving guys like Smid, Cogliano, Vandy, Foster, Jones for prospects/picks doesn't really hurt the team next year if they are looking to try to win because they can find players to replace those guys, via UFA , trade, etc

And Tampa is a pretty decent franchise compared to Atlanta and Phoenix.
