- Ranking: BM-21; ISS-10; Redline-11
- Redline Report: Klefbom is a real Red Line favorite. He's certainly the most overlooked of the top prospects, but is the best pure passer of the bunch, and his skating ranks only behind Murphy. He already makes pro style passes — crisp and with touch — and excels at breaking the trap with tremendous stretch passes through the neutral zone, showing great vision. He was also the natural leader on Sweden's national under-18 team. All this comes wrapped in a 6-3, 196-pound package, and Klefbom has really stepped up the physical aspect of his game over the last 12 months. At Red Line, we believe he might ultimately become the best all-around balance of offensive upside and physical strength in this year's class.
- TSN (Grant McCagg): Captained Sweden to a silver medal at the U-18 championships, and appeared in 23 games for Farjestad in the SEL at 17 years of age. His stock rose as the season went on, culminating with his strong play at the U-18's. Strengths - High character player who did it all for Sweden at the U-18's, considered a warrior with tremendous leadership qualities. Good size and strength, reads the play well and will jump into the rush, good vision and passing skills, good compete level, likes to play physically. Weaknesses - Has a clumsy skating style, needs to work on quickness and lower body strength. NHL Upside - May develop into a top three NHL defenceman who takes care of his own end and sees some time on the second powerplay unit.
What's the word on him?
ReplyDeleteI had no idea he was so young. July birthday. Captained his team for the U-18s this year.
ReplyDeleteHe's a big bruising puck mover from what I've heard. I think we'll like him.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'll repost it here: date of birth seems relevant. July 20, 1993.
ReplyDeleteVery nice pick, Stu.
ReplyDeleteNot the upside of a Larsson, but this kid could be a heck of a player 3 years down the line. Nice mix of speed and physical play. Maybe he can pick up more of an offensive game in Sweden next season.
Trade up for a goalie? (kidding)
Rock of Ages, Klef for me

Def: nostimp - refusing to address your teams needs on draft day.
Quick look at my hockey news guide news and i said klefbom is the guy before the 19th pick...jusy acll me MBS.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Klefbom!!!
ReplyDeleteHere's a scouting report on Klefbom from David Staples Twitter.
ReplyDeleteDuthie should ask this kid.
ReplyDelete"We've compared you to a fourth line shit bag. Your thoughts?"
Absolutely love this pick. Serious chance of being a better dman than Siemens, Bealieu and Oleksiak. Only issue is hockey sense, but has ALL the tools.
ReplyDeleteLT you are amazing.
BTW, nice trade, LA. :p
ReplyDeleteWe give up 1 year and 2 months of Penner, and get Klefblom, Teubert (our future 2nd pairing?) and a 3rd next year.
Hahahah. Toronto you silly.
ReplyDeleteAdding another plumber.
28 points in 48... got outscored by a 15 years old d-man on his club LOL.

ReplyDeleteKlefblom:
Ritchie:
Almost there:
That Toronto pick stunk of Riley Nash. (Biggs)
ReplyDeleteDamn. was hoping Biggs would last til 31.
ReplyDeleteDG: Why? He can't score for shit.
ReplyDeleteI'd bet some money on Tyler being a "milkman" son. How else do you explain the 5 inch difference between father and son?
ReplyDeleteRicki
ReplyDeleteAgreed, we get Ritchie now I will be very happy.
Another trade...
i wonder what kind of crappy reach the Sens will make this time???
ReplyDeleteFPB: Care to do some reading?
ReplyDeletehttp://bubbling-under.blogspot.com/2011/06/2011-draft-poi-tyler-biggs.html
fpb-who do you like at 31?
ReplyDeleteGerta: If he's there... Zack Phillips. 95 Points.
ReplyDeleteDG: Sounds like a 3rd/4th liner to me. I mean he got oustscored by a 15 year old d-man on his club. That's bad.
Morrow and Jenner are both still on the board. If I'm the Oilers, I might burn a couple picks and reach for Morrow.
ReplyDeleteYou'd think 31 and Flames pick would get us in a nice spot for a guy like Phillips. (If you want Richie I think he falls to 31)
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with drafting Swedish captains.
ReplyDeleteWell done.
Bring him over in 2012 to play in the AHL, NHL in 2013.
So much for Morrow....
ReplyDeleteSB: Get'em Both. Trade 2 3rd's for a 2nd.
ReplyDeletefpb: Do we really need another top-6 guy? I think we're good there. Best to find the best bodyguard in the draft.
ReplyDeleteZach Phillips reminds me so much of Sam Gagner...its quite alarming.
ReplyDeleteFPB
ReplyDeleteI would be ok with Phillips there too, but don't think he makes it.
I might be a few years ahead there.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't sound like he'd come over to play in AHL.
DG: Never. Ever. At best Phillips score a shitload in the AHL and we can trade for a prime time guard.
ReplyDeleteIf you want a guard, trade for it. Cheaper than picking with N31 and taking a ticket.
It's always about exceeding your picks' market value, and bodyguards don't do that. (At least not often... some exeptions)
I liked the clip of Setoguchi catching up to Gagner and pasting him into the boards when they announced the trade. Oy.
ReplyDeleteIf Jenner falls, he'd be a good pick at 31.
ReplyDeleteRichie has too many question marks. We need a player not a fighter.
The good thing is that Stu has the night to sleep on who was passed up in the first. Worked pretty well last year with Pitlick.
That birthdate on Klefbom is favoruable.
ReplyDeleteI don't like taking defenceman, but by the sounds of it, this guy does have top pairing potential.
Probably a wise choice after MacNeil was chosen.
FPB: I'm sure Gagner could score quite a bit in the A as well...its just they both have the same weakneeses. Neither quick or strong, both try to get by on jedi mind tricks.
ReplyDeleteI had Puempel with Ottawa's second first round selection. He's a couple selections late.
ReplyDeleteToo many top six forwards is a good problem to have. Draft BPA and get as many guys as you can and those that don't play with you help you trade for guys that will.
ReplyDeleteDangerman: So does Eberle....
ReplyDeleteAt worst Gagner still has more value than JFJ. Biggs' scoring in his range.
Ah...good ol' Ottawa got their Joffrey Lupul. What a waste. If I was Eugene Melnyk, I'd tell his amatur scouting staff to go home. They have done enough damage for one night.
ReplyDeleteSmarmy:
ReplyDeleteBiggs was Bob's BPA. Thoughts?
I'd like Grimaldi or Rattie at 31
ReplyDeleteI wonder if a Gm should feel dumb for drafting a guy that compares to Lapierre and a few picks later they draft a guy that compares to Vanek.
ReplyDeleteThe kid had half the scoring of guys like Jack Skille FFS.
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers web dude is saying Klefbom has 2 yrs left on his Euro deal and he plans on playing them out.
ReplyDeleteSmarmy:
ReplyDeleteBiggs was Bob's BPA. Thoughts?
Uh he was wrong? I dunno what to say. Draft the best player on your board not the pundits.
I thought they said Klefbom had one year left and he would leave the SEL if he had a shot at the NHL. (Which he does with the Oilers terrible blueline)
ReplyDeleteJenner, Saad, Jurco, Gibson and I guess Phillips are all in play for 31.
ReplyDeleteI'm ok passing on Morrow. God help the kid if he didn't turn out perfectly, he'd be Comrie'd or Lupul'd in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm right, that's the first player taken off Bob's Top-30.
ReplyDeleteWhy would you trade up for a reach? That stinks Prendergast style.
ReplyDeleteYeah that was 2 questionable TOR picks.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm right, that's the first player taken off Bob's Top-30.
ReplyDeleteNoeson?
Schitzo:
ReplyDeletegood call.
I know it would be out of character for Burke, but the Leafs were in a position where they could really afford to take a chance on Grimaldi.
ReplyDeleteBob Mac tweeting that Brian Campbell has waived his NTC to go to Florida.
ReplyDelete3 picks in the 1st round. Bryan Murray knows how to fast track a rebuild.

ReplyDeleteGagner, Plante, Nash.
FUCK YEAH.
(I apologize. I have been drinking.)

ReplyDeleteGagner, Plante, Nash.
ReplyDeleteFUCK YEAH.
I LOL'd
Schitzo: MTL snapped Ryan Mcdonagh (NHL defenseman at 21) and Max Pacioretty in the same draft.
ReplyDeleteWho you draft, not how many.
I keep hoping Phillips will fall to us. I like him better that Rattie or Richie
ReplyDeleteI would marry Namestnikov's sister to get her a visa any day.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletebpa bpa, just stick to it
ReplyDeleteWhy is Saad still available?
ReplyDeleteFPB sheds a single tear...
ReplyDeleteHenry: Cause he can't score.
ReplyDeleteFacebook Message from my friend:
ReplyDeleteMe : Phillips taken by wild
Him: Poor him.
(Translated)
I'd take Saad over Biggs, or over some of the other taken in the first round so far, but has the DP27 syndrome, so there is some risk/reward to that.
ReplyDeleteHow about the new Oilers jerseys? Looked nice.
ReplyDeleteThe good news about Phillips going is the Oilers won't get the oppurtunity to take him.
ReplyDeleteDanger: Seriously? He'd be a top 10 pick in weaker drafts.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Oilers called Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ name at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in Minnesota, he was given the new Vintage Away jersey which the Oilers will now wear as their permanent road jersey.
ReplyDeleteFPB: Like I said...Sam Gagner. I'm not saying its good or bad, but we already have one of those and don't really need another one.
ReplyDeleteSchitzo, which one? The babushka brunette?
ReplyDeleteDanger: Don't pick for need.
ReplyDeleteGagner now could fetch our hole in the bottom 6 or +. Voracek was traded for Carter.
Get value, then you trade for players better than the projection of guys who filled your needs.
Why would you mention where he was ranked? What a cockend.
ReplyDeleteFPV: Philips isn't that much better than someone like Jurco or Jenner, a player that they can get more out of. At some point, needs need to be addressed. IF we were going BPA, we'd be drafting Grimaldi.
ReplyDeleteDanger: Phillips scored 95 points... Jurco 60.
ReplyDeleteSeriously. Wtf?
No. If you want to adress need, trade that pick. Don't waste it on low % guys.
Nothing tells our needs now will be needs in 4 years down the road.
Coke Machine drafting was for ''need''. Look how it worked.
FBV: C'Mon Man. Don't be such a mathlete, apply some "saw him good" to your technique, it'll get you some better results.
ReplyDeleteDon't like Phillips, don't want Phillips. Are we clear?
Jenner or Saad?
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see who goes 31. Some good choices left.
ReplyDeleteJenner...
ReplyDeleteNo fuckin' Saad, or Jurco or whatever.
Rick: Jenner. The Oilers could use some "real" centers.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to think that it will be hard for Kevin Lowe and the scout staff to pass up on David Musil at 31.
ReplyDeleteJenner gets my vote also
ReplyDelete"ISS head scout Ross MacLean says that Klefbom is "steal of the draft". Says the Oilers could trade the rest of their picks and win the draft"
ReplyDeleteNails it. I was expecting Klefbom to go top 10, duking it out with Siemens for the 10th spot. I was worried the Oilers would go for a coke machine in Oleksiak, but fortunately seem to have been saved from that.
A very good day. Props to Steve and especially Stu.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow should be fun, we have #1 in the 2nd and #1 and #13 in the 3rd.
Three concerns remain:
ReplyDelete1. I didn't see it, but apparently people were suggesting via body language, that Klefbom wasn't overly thrilled.
2. Oilers web guy stated Klefbom expects to play 2 more years in Sweden - hopefully signing him is not an issue.
3. Has Ryan Smyth trade been official? WTF is the delay for?
_________
Wanted MacNeil badly - he'll probably be a top 6 guy. His numbers were good and he was driving the bus in PA. That said, Klefbom does address a team need and DOES have top pairing potential. That's comforting when you see guys picked in the similar range with bottom pairing or 3rd line upside.
I like Musil at 31.
ReplyDeleteHe's living at Gary Roberts' place and working out with that crew this summer (Stamkos etc) That's a good thing.
Frank was a hell of a NHLer.
Bowman gets a 1st for Brower and unloads Campbell? Watch out for CHI again. Great work by Bowman.
Smyth *officially done* Brule and a 5th, LAK expected to trade Brule.
Wanted MacNeil badly - he'll probably be a top 6 guy. His numbers were good and he was driving the bus in PA.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
Crushed that CHI got him.
Bowman owned the day.
Where you seeing that WG?-I still can't find an official confirmation of the Smyth deal.
ReplyDeletePJO: I had some concern about Klefbom's body language, he seems kind of aloof, which makes me think a contract signing could be tougher than usual. But other than that, his on ice persona is ideal for the Oilers.
ReplyDeleteSmyth is done according to TSN, but not according to Tambi, who in Jebus does he think he's kidding?
I wanted McNeill as well. I'm kind of torn on it because the Oilers do need some D prospects badly as well, so I'm cool with Klefbom.
ReplyDelete1. I didn't see it, but apparently people were suggesting via body language, that Klefbom wasn't overly thrilled.
I think that's a stretch.
He seemed happy that the Oilers weren't good and he could make the team quickly.
Stated he was going back to SWE next year. No sweat.
Helene Elliot's twitter.
ReplyDeleteKings beat writer. (in the HHOF I think)
It's in the MSM in several places, but neither team has announced it as far as I can see.
ReplyDeleteThen again,it is RNH day so...
ReplyDeleteMy pick at 31
ReplyDeleteThat's some good stuff, Dorito.

@helenenothelen reporting Smyth o EDM is DONE. For a 5th and Brule, who we suspect could be moved or bought out by Kings

I think everyone is reading way to much into how Klefbom reacted to being drafted. The kid barely speaks english and was probably very nervous being on stage and talking to TSN like that.
ReplyDeleteI have a few friends for SWE and they have a very distinct demeanor that can sometimes be misunderstood by people in NA. I really would not worry about this kid right now, they come from a place they consider to be paradise and I understand the hesitation to come over when you are so young to play in the minor leagues vs. playing in the show in your home country.
I remember how many people were worried about Lander and the deal got done, just have to resist the temptation to read to much into a very small sample size (saw him good?) in terms of body language/word choice.
Well the Oilers just tweeted:
ReplyDeleteNHL_Oilers
#Oilers GM Steve Tambellini on the Ryan Smyth trade: "There's nothing done at this time"
Klefbom video

When the Oilers called Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ name at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in Minnesota, he was given the new Vintage Away jersey which the Oilers will now wear as their permanent road jersey.
ReplyDeletePermanent is a relative term when talking jerseys.
Dorito. You have sold me on Jenner.
Spoiler - nice call on Brodin. I still don't like the pick but what do I know.
Boone Jenner sounds a lot like Ryan O'Reilly, and I really wanted the Oilers to get him in his draft year too.
ReplyDeleteThough I understand the Oilers are very high on Mayfield, and I suspect that will be the pick.
Looking at age and present height and weight -- Klefbom is going to be pretty big in a couple years.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching his post-draft interview on NHL.com and checking out some Sweded YouTube, liking the look of this pick. Good competitive attitude and potential to get even bigger. Hopefully with O'mark, MPS, Lander and now the big OK, we will have a big chunk of the future Swedish National team.
ReplyDeleteHe's living at Gary Roberts' place and working out with that crew this summer (Stamkos etc) That's a good thing.
ReplyDeleteDammit. You mean we had an in to the Roberts camp and Hall/Eberle aren't there!?
fartmen - really, that's my captcha code.
